Gas or diesel is the first decision when configuring the 2027 Ford Super Duty F-250. The standard 7.3L V8 gas engine is a naturally aspirated design suited to payload-focused work, and the available 6.7L high-output Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel engine uses a variable-geometry turbocharger to build its towing strength. The gas engine is also prepared at the factory for compressed natural gas (CNG) or propane through the standard CNG/Propane Gaseous Engine Prep Package, which adds hardened intake valves and valve seats and a bi-fuel manifold. The package does not include fuel tanks or lines, so the truck leaves the factory on its standard gasoline fuel system, and an outside upfitter completes the conversion if you plan to run the truck on alternative fuel.
A ten-speed automatic transmission backs both engines, the TorqShift®-G with the 7.3L V8 gas engine and the TorqShift with the Power Stroke diesel engine. Selectable drive modes come standard, with normal, slippery, tow/haul, and eco settings. Tow/haul mode adjusts shift points to hold gears on climbs and increases engine braking on descents, and diesel models include an exhaust brake for further control with a heavy load.
Drivetrain choices include 4×2 and 4×4, and 4×4 models come with electronic-shift-on-the-fly. For unpaved jobsites and trails, the available FX4® Off-Road Package adds off-road-tuned shock absorbers, skid plates, hill descent control, and rock crawl mode. The available Tremor® Off-Road Package builds on that with 35-inch off-road tires, a ride height increase, and a rear electronic-locking differential.

Towing is where the 2027 Ford Super Duty F-250 does its heaviest work. When properly equipped with the 6.7L high-output Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel engine, the truck tows up to 22,000 pounds with a conventional hitch and up to 23,000 pounds with a gooseneck hitch. The 7.3L V8 gas engine tows up to 18,200 pounds with a conventional hitch or 19,500 pounds with a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch, and it carries the higher payload rating at 4,175 pounds.
Configuration determines which rating applies. Each diesel towing maximum requires the F-250 High-Capacity Axle Upgrade Package, and the 22,000-pound conventional rating applies to the 4×4 crew cab and the 4×4 super cab with the 8-foot bed. The top fifth-wheel and gooseneck ratings belong to the 4×2 regular cab, and the gas engine reaches its maximums with the 4.30 axle ratio.
